A few people have asked me this question since the launch of our new website: why are there only white women in your photos? The site looks great, but where’s the diversity? The short answer? Because I screwed up. Because I wasn’t thinking. Because I wasn’t prioritizing racial diversity.
I had good intentions. I wanted to use our actual team instead of models, because I was focused on showing what was real. We were dolled up but we were not photoshopped. But in focusing on that good intention, I forgot about something else completely that is just as important.
I am humbled enough to admit that as CEO, racial diversity was something that I failed to prioritize and ask for during our company’s last photoshoot. I’m sorry if that made anyone in our community feel invisible. But I’m focusing in on this right now, and I want to thank our community for the loving way they have stood for both me and the company overall, and pushed me to prioritize this more intentionally moving forward.
And we do have it. Our Mastermind members are diverse, our operations team is diverse and our mentors are amazing women who live across the world. I’m talking Seattle to Tampa, Thailand, Cayman Islands and beyond. This diversity makes our community engaging and fluid in the most beautiful way.
So we are diverse in many ways, but we don’t look diverse from our photos, and representation is really important. I want all women to feel represented, spoken to, and heard when it comes to Inner Glow Circle.
Ultimately, this issue goes beyond just representation in photos. We are diverse in many ways, but we could be more. This is something that I have my eye on for the future. I’m excited for the ways we can continue to grow and develop our company through new voices and experiences within our leadership team. Thank you to all who challenge us to grow and support us along the way. These past 1.5 years have been a crazy ride and we are gearing up for so much more.
In gratitude,
Katie
