I was not raised in a woo-world at all. I wasn’t raised in a totally awesome ashram or given a meditation pillow at an early age. I wasn’t taught to tune into myself and even now I think it’s a heck of alot easier to Google the answers than to say, meditate on them. Other than a few stories of my parents’ wild times at Woodstock or how my mom was nervous giving birth to a Leo (me) with a loud and overbearing personality (also, kinda me–but not totally)… most of my childhood experiences were pretty normal. Normal mixed in with a side of Catholic fear and guilt, coupled with learned fears and insecurities specifically in the areas of money and relationships. BUT, nothing too out of the ordinary.
This is why it’s hard for me to meditate today and why it’s out of my comfort zone to pull a card, hold some crystals or commit to a meditation practice….right?
BUT, I’m sort of lying. When I think back to the root of who I am, it’s so freakin’ far from what some would consider “normal”. I questioned EVERYTHING normal as a kid and still do. I didn’t want to ask adults what to do or take the traditional path to success and I have always found way more useful answers from a tarot deck, a journaling prompt or an afternoon in the woods, alone. As a little girl I remember being fascinated by astrology, using my allowance to pay for psychic readings over the phone and making stardust bottles where my wishes could be shaken into reality. Besides the F.K.A. “Self-Help” section at the bookstore, I also frequented the aisles of tarot, astrology and spirituality and wondered why I couldn’t take a class on this instead of the New Testament at school.
What I know now is that I’m still in both places. I need the practical, the “normal” in my life sometimes. But I also need the woo. See, my ego SO wants the cards, the crystals, the answers in meditation to be wrong. My ego wants me to feel like they are “not enough” or “not normal enough”. My ego says, these signs and feelings are too good to be true so they must not be for me. My ego says, you’re wasting time meditating, just Google it already!
But my heart and my childhood spirit says differently:
This is enough.
This is for you.
Be quiet, tune in.
What’s meant for you will not miss you.
You see, as much as I want to deny what I know to be true (meditation, the power of my chakras, tarot, astrology and more) for myself, I can’t. Maybe these studies and concepts aren’t widely accepted or go against what you were raised to believe…but what if they make you feel good? What if they allow you to see parts of yourself that you have been tuning out? What if they bring you to an enlightened and empowered place that ego/fear tries to pull you out of by “just being normal”?
If I know one thing for sure, it’s that from an enlightened and empowered place I can access my highest self. And it’s from this place that I can go out into the world and create what I’m meant to create in this lifetime. So–why not embrace some woo…for the sake of you and all that you wish to do in this world?
And yes, there is a crystal for this. Go ahead and pick up an Amethyst to super activate your intuition. Place it over your third eye when meditating and listen for the answers. I mean, worst case scenario you get 10 minutes of quiet time and beautiful new stone. Best case scenario…you hear the answers that will change your life (no Google needed).
