How To Do a Coaching Session

One of the most common questions we always get from new coaches is how to do a coaching session. How do you get a clear coaching request from your client? Or even how do you figure out what they want to talk about on each coaching session? Well, it’s pretty simple. All you have to do is ask them!! Keep reading to find out how to run a coaching session with easy step by step directions. Step 1–Ground and Connect: 5 Minutes⁣ ⁣

The key is to build on the relationship, trust and intimacy⁣.

Step 2–The Coaching Request: 5 Minutes⁣

⁣Figure out what the client wants to walk away from the session with.

Step 3–Review GLOW Plan/Check-in: 10 Minutes⁣ ⁣

In IGC, G.L.O.W. means Greatest Level of Want. The GLOW plan is the client’s project plan that outlines the goals, timelines, accountability around their goals, measures of growth + success along the way and ways to celebrate their accomplishments at the end (and along the way!)⁣.

Step 4–Coach Around Request: 30 Minutes⁣

⁣Here’s where you ask powerful questions, listen actively, offer reflections, utilize direct communication + get super clear on goals and actions!⁣ ⁣

Step 5–Review Commitments and Practice Areas: 5 Minutes⁣

⁣At this point, you want to make sure your client is clear on what their commitments are and what their “what by when” is for each commitment. Here’s where you establish accountability!⁣ ⁣

Step 6–Close and Complete: 5 Minutes⁣

⁣Lastly, you’ll want to close out the session by offering acknowledgment and go over their IGC. For example, ask them what has them feeling Inspired from today’s session. Next, ask your client what Goals are they taking on this week. Make sure to end the session on high note by asking what do they want to Celebrate today.
