Two years ago, I was seriously struggling in my business. I’d been at it full-time for about six months, and I had what felt like nothing to show for it. I was almost out of savings, wasn’t bringing in any money, and was ready to throw in the towel and go get another corporate job.

Luckily, a friend had invited me to do a workshop at a festival he had put together in Iceland that May. The theme of the workshop?
Change your story, change your life. It was all about how to shift the stories that we tell ourselves about who we are and what’s possible for us, to create more fulfilling, joyful, abundant lives.

As I delivered the workshop, I had a powerful realization – I mentally understood this concept. I could even teach it. But I wasn’t living it. For months, I’d been telling myself a story that business was hard, that no one wanted to hear what I had to say, and that I’d be seen as too “out there,” “woo,” or “weird.” And that had kept me playing small and hiding out, not to mention broke.

Once I got home, I committed to getting visible, putting myself out there, and sharing my voice. And that June, I created my first $5k month.

We hear a lot about “thoughts become things,” but what about what’s underneath those thoughts? Beneath those thoughts is the STORY you’re telling yourself about who you are, what you want, and what’s possible for you in this life. The story we carry determines our thoughts, which determine the nature of the reality we experience.

If you’re telling yourself a story that you’re always the underdog, or the survivor, or you “make it work,” subconsciously you’ll always be creating situations to prove that to yourself. So why not tell a story in which you’re the leader, the heroine, or the queen? Try it on for size, and watch the world rearrange itself to mirror that back to you.

Four steps to change your story:

  • Identify your current, disempowering story. The easiest way to do this is to look at where you’re not experiencing what you want. If you always feel broke, what story are you telling yourself about money? If you’re perpetually single, what story are you telling yourself about dating + relationships? Question yourself, and you’ll start to get some distance between yourself and your story.
  • Identify what you want to be experiencing instead. Get specific. Exactly how much money do you want to be bringing in each month? What exactly are you looking for in a partner? How will having what you want make you FEEL?
  • Identify what you need to believe to create that. This can be as simple as “it’s safe to be wealthy,” or “there are plenty of good men out there,” or as specific as “I serve the world by bringing in six figures in my business,” or “I am ready for a soul-mate relationship.” There’s no right way to do this – go with your gut.
  • Take action from those beliefs. This is where the rubber meets the road – you actually have to DO something about changing your story. Ask yourself what the version of you who already believed those things would do. Would she make a few extra sales calls? Get on Tinder? Follow your intuition and take action, even if it doesn’t make logical sense. This is where the most resistance is likely to come up, so support is crucial.

Changing your story is not always easy, but with these steps it can be simple. And it’s MOST definitely worth it.

I believe in you! What’s the new story that you want to create for yourself?
